Obituary of Roland Swartz

Roland ?Fat? Swartz, 81, a life time St. Johnsville resident, passed away on June 7, 2006 at his home. He was born November 27, 1924 in St. Johnsville, the son of Howard Swartz, Sr. and Anna (Sweeney) Swartz. He was a 1944 graduate of St. Johnsville High School. Mr. Swartz was a veteran of the U.S. Army honorably discharged in 1943. He was a Highway Engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation until his retirement. Roland was a Trustee of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, St. Johnsville, a 60-year member of the St. Johnsville Fire Department where he served one term as Assistant Fire Chief and for many years until his passing, served as Treasurer and Fire Councilman. He was a two time recipient of the St. Johnsville Fireman of the Year Award and twice chosen Montgomery County Fireman of the Year. He was a long time member of S.A.V.A.C., for many years a driver and treasurer until his death. He was chosen Ambulance Member of the Year in 2002. The village of St. Johnsville honored him by dedicating the new St. Johnsville Well Field in his name in 1999. Fat was a member and past commander of the St. Johnsville American Legion, and a long time member of the H.C. Smith Benefit Club, serving as treasurer until recently. In 2005 he was selected Mohawk Valley Rotary Club Citizen of the Year. Survivors include his wife Rita, a son Michael ?Mickey? Swartz and wife Robin, two special granddaughters Amanda and Tiffany Swartz, brother George Swartz and wife Donna, a sister Ethel Rider and husband Joseph, and a sister-in-law, Jean Swartz all of St. Johnsville. He is also survived by several nieces & nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brothers, Leonard, Howard and Edward and his wife Marian. Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 10, 2006 at 9:30 am from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY and at 10:00 am from St. Patrick?s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Friday June 9, 2006 from 5-8 pm. All memorial contributions may be made to Mt.
