Obituary of Joan Tanner

Joan B. Tanner, 81, of 33 S. Richfield St., Mohawk, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2006, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer. She was born June 21, 1924, in Taunton, Somerset, England. She was the daughter of the late Olive and Cyril Palmer. She was raised and educated in Taunton, Somerset. During World War II she met Ernest Tanner, an American soldier from Herkimer. They were married in Taunton, England, on Sept. 25, 1945. In August of 1946, she moved to the United States, making her home initially in Herkimer and later moving to Mohawk. Her husband, Ernie, passed away on Sept. 7, 1984 . She is also predeceased by her sister, Esme Griffiths, of Taunton. A dedicated wife and loving mother, her home and family were the center of her life. Joan was a very caring person who loved to talk and socialize with everyone. She will be greatly missed. At one time, Joan was employed by Munger's in Herkimer. She then worked at Univac in Utica as an engineering service clerk, retiring from there in 1978. She was a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church. Joan enjoyed swimming with her friends, her camp at Canadarago Lake, shopping for bargains, knitting, cooking, cleaning, talking with people and her family and grandchildren. Joan is survived by two sons, Allen Tanner and his wife Janet of Ilion and Gregory Tanner and his wife Betsy of Mohawk; six grandchildren, Nicole and her husband Rudy Gadziala of Albany, Jody and husband Sean Karla of Syracuse, Kerri Tanner of Albany, Michael and wife Denise of Northford, Conn., Marc and wife Kate of Dolgeville, Tara Tanner of Little Falls, and her great-granddaughter, Julia Marie of Northford, Conn. Joan is also survived by her brother-in-law, Syd Griffiths of England and her three nieces and their families of England, Ann Cross and husband Martin, Chris Acott and husband Robert and Lynn Sizer and husband David. Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral service at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk, with the Rev. Brian Engel, pastor of the Mohawk Reformed Church, officiating. Interment will be at the Mohawk Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 4, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
