Obituary of Theodora Terzo

Theodora ?Teddi? E. Terzo, 89, formerly of Sunrise Court, Frankfort and Grove Street, Ilion, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at Hospice of the Valley, Arbor Home, Mesa, Ariz. She was born June 10, 1916 , in Oneonta, the daughter of George William and Elizabeth (Van Duser) Hill and attended Oneonta and New York City schools. On April 6, 1945, she was married to James A. Terzo in San Diego, Calif. He died on Dec. 18, 2001. Teddi was employed for 23 years at Sperry Rand Univac in Ilion and Utica. She was also the owner and operator of Casa Bella Beauty Shop in Frankfort and Ilion for 22 years, retiring in 1988. For several years Teddi worked as an assistant desirologist (hairdresser for the deceased) at the Applegate & Day Funeral Homes in Ilion and Mohawk. She attended St. Mary's Church in Frankfort and the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion. As a former resident of Frankfort and longtime resident of Ilion, she served actively in church, school, fraternal and community groups. Her activities and officerships varied from local community to state to the national level. For over 40 years, she served as an active member of the Women of the Moose Ilion Chapter No. 31, where she served as escort, hospital chairman, chaplain and junior regent, and was elected to senior regent in 1961-62. She was appointed deputy grand regent for the state of New York in 1971-72. In 1978, she was chosen as Outstanding Woman of the Year for the United States and Canada, and was awarded the Paul P. Schmitz Award, receiving an honorary Mooseheart High School diploma. The ceremony was held at Mooseheart in Illinois as a testimony to her Moose and civic affairs achievements. On July 8, 1978, Ilion Mayor James Garnsey declared ?Theodora Terzo Day? in honor of her outstanding community services and dedication. She was recognized as one of the ?Distinguished Citizens of the Community.? She was chairman of the Women of the Moose 68th Anniversary held in Ilion, hosting representatives from across the U.S. and Canada, in a weekend of many activities organized by her. Credited with the enrollment of more than 150 new members, she achieved an international office, and on May 28, 1987, was installed in Orlando, Fla., and was named president of the Women of the Moose of the International College of Regents Boards for the U.S. and Canada. In addition to her continuous Moose membership work, she was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, member of the Mohawk Valley Hospital Guild, having served three terms as president, active volunteer, chairman and fund-raiser to benefit the hospital; member of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Advisory Council in Herkimer, past member of the Friends of the Library in Ilion, and past president of the Women of the Moose bowling league. Teddi was also honorary member of the Alumni Association of Mooseheart and admissions assistant for Mooseheart-Moosehaven, a public program to help needy families with a home, jobs and education. Church and school memberships included: Court St. Bridget No. 265 Catholic Daughters of the Americas (Ilion) since 1975, holding office as ?worthy grand regent? for four years; member of the Ilion Council of Catholic Women and was responsible for many church fund-raisers. Perhaps her greatest achievements were those behind the scenes, helping other volunteers and giving encouragement, decorating the hospital Christmas tree, the children's Christmas party, helping teachers, transporting friends and neighbors, attending out-of-area meetings (at her own expense) so that local groups would get the credit, and volunteer work with the sick and elderly at the nursing home and hospital. She was hard-working, dedicated and devoted, a friend and a loving wife, mother and grandmother who has left a legacy and who will be greatly missed. Survivors include her daughters, Audrey Cave and husband Jon of Apache Junction, Ariz., Deanna Snow of Apache Junction, Ariz., Angela Blauvelt and her husband Douglas of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Beth Ann Zalocka and her husband Ronald of Little River, S.C.; 12 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; her sister, Joyce Fedish of Binghamton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, George Hill and her sister, Leonta ?Jean? Layton. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a special memorial service for Teddi on Thursday, March 2, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, West Street, Ilion, where a Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Anthony Barratt, pastor. There will be a memorial register book to be signed by everyone attending the service, and which will later be sent to members of the immediate family. There will also be special keepsake prayer cards available at the service. Services will also be held tomorrow at St. George's Church, Apache Junction, Ariz. A double inurnment for both Teddi and Jim Terzo's cremains will be held on March 1, 2006, at Mountain View Cemetery, Mesa, Ariz. Special envelopes will also be available at the Applegate & Day Funeral home and at the memorial service at the Annunciation Church.
