Obituary of Lena Avery

Lena A. (Strzyzewski) Avery, 96, a longtime resident of Oregon Road, Mohawk, passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 4, 2005, at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion. Lena was born June 6, 1909, in Tupper Lake, daughter of Frank and Amy Provost. She attended school in Tupper Lake. Lena was united in marriage to Kenneth J. "Ken" Avery, a blessed and caring union of over 45 years. Lena was last employed by Duofold Co. in Mohawk as a professional seamstress. At one time she worked at the March Knitting Mill in Mohawk and other knitting mills in the Mohawk Valley as a seamstress. She also worked at the old egg carton plant in Herkimer many years ago. Lena enjoyed knitting, embroidery and fishing; she also loved her house in the country that she shared with Ken. Survivors include her devoted husband, Ken; her cherished nieces and nephews, Maurice Malley of Broadalbin, Raymond Malley of Johnstown, Margaret Sitterly of Florida, Joyce Able of Long Island, Linda Soules of Gloversville and Bernadette Dwyer of Johnstown, several great-nieces and great-nephews; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Marilyn and John Willems and Don and Una Avery, all of Ilion; and her friend and caregiver, Grace Clark. Lena was predeceased by her sister, Olive Malley and her nieces, Harriett Smith and Jeanette Obermann. Family and friends are invited to visitation on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Applegate and Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Lena's funeral service will be held Monday, Aug. 8, commencing at 10 a.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Best officiating. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Those wishing to do so may consider memorial contributions in Lena's name to MOVAC or the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home Foundation.
