Obituary of Agnes Chizzonite
Mrs. Agnes M. "Dolly" (Sanzo) Chizzonite, age 87, of Maple Grove Ave., died unexpectedly on December 3, 2005 at St. Elizabeth"s Medical Center, Utica surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong Herkimer resident, she was born on October 26, 1918, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Casadonte) Sanzo. Her marriage of 62 years to Louis A. "Cooky" Chizzonite took place on June 1, 1940 at St. Anthony's Church, Herkimer. Mr. Chizzonite passed away on January 2, 2003. Upon graduation from Herkimer High School, Agnes was employed by Bertelle Manufacturing until her retirement in 1973. A devout Catholic, Agnes was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. She enjoyed volunteering for the kindergarten class at St. Francis and in her daughter's 2nd grade class at Bills School. Affectionately known as "Mrs. C", Agnes enjoyed the many hours she shared with the children. In her leisure time, Agnes enjoyed playing cards, sewing, and was a voracious reader. She was a founding member of the Herkimer Lady Elks and served as president from 1964-1965. Agnes was a charter member of Valley Helpers, a member of the ILGWU and appeared in 1938 before the House Labor Non-Partisan League Conference, in Washington. She was a member of the AARP, the Alzheimer's Support Group, and the Town of Herkimer Senior Citizens. She had also served as a volunteer for the Herkimer County Historical Society and the Association for the Blind. Agnes was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She selflessly offered love and devotion to all her family and friends throughout her lifetime. Survivors include two beloved children: L. David Chizzonite and wife Rosemarie of Baldwinsville and Mary Lou VanDerwiel and husband Albert of Herkimer; a brother in law: Domenick Chizzonite and wife Sue of Little Falls and a sister in law: Sara Santillo of Herkimer. She is also survived by six cherished grandchildren: Melissa A. Fryer and husband Jeremy, David A. Chizzonite and wife Shelly, Aaron P. VanDerwiel and wife Agija, J. Daniel Chizzonite and wife Alyssa, Mary Kathryn VanDerwiel and Ann Marie Gadomski and husband Richard, four great grandchildren: Jenna and Taylor Fryer and Lucian and Gabriel Chizzonite; many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. She was predeceased by two sisters and brothers in law: Barbara and Joseph Sanzo and Clare and Ralph Mantello; two brothers and sisters in law: Joseph and Theresa Sanzo and Nick and Louise Sanzo and two brothers in law: Rocco Chizzonite and wife Josephine and Anthony Santillo. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the St. Elizabeth's Trauma Center and the fourth floor Special Care Unit with special thanks Lisa Larkin for the kindness and compassion extended to Agnes and her family. The family will be present in the Holleran & Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, December 6, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Members of the Town of Herkimer Senior Citizens will gather at the funeral home on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. to conduct their service. Mrs. Chizzonite's funeral will commence on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at 10:15 am from the funeral home where prayer will be offered. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am from St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, with the Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Memorial contributions may be offered to St. Francis de Sales Catholic School, Herkimer County Humane Society or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
