Obituary of Charles DeVine

After 76 years of a fun-filled life, Charles "Chuck" Edward DeVine joined his parents in Heaven while shoveling snow on March 3, 2005. Chuck was born in Ilion, NY on Sept. 22, 1929, the son of the late Charles Willard and Mildred Katherine (Mullaney) DeVine. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1946-48, returning to Herkimer and marrying Mildred Gilbert from Herkimer in 1953. They had three children, Richard (Panama City, Fla.), Linda (Gloucester Point, Va.), and Brian (Mohawk, NY). He worked as a machinist/tool-maker at Herkimer Tool and Model, Bendix, and MDS, retiring as MDS left the valley. After retirement, he continued his trade as a hobby at his home on Kayuta Lake, Foresport, NY. Chuck was an avid bowler, and a team member on the Monday and Thursday night bowling league at Herkimer Bowling Alley for many years. He won many trophies and warmed the hearts of all who knew him. Loved by all, Chuck is survived by his wife and children; five grandchildren, Duane Merritt and Jason, Andrea, Brian, and Dennis DeVine; three great-grandchildren, Jessie, Irrie and Brayden DeVine; nieces and nephews; and close friends in the local area. Please join us as we pass our beloved father into eternal life. A gathering of friends and relatives will be held at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. A memorial service will commence at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with Father Anthony Barratt, pastor of the Church of the Annunciation, officiating. A special celebration of Chuck's life will be held for friends and family during his annual Fourth of July party on Kayuta Lake.
