Obituary of Rocco Fiato

Mr. Rocco J. Fiato, 87, of Herkimer, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 17, 2005, at his residence with his loving family and his private healthcare givers at his side. He was born on January 3, 1918 in Herkimer, a son of the late Allesandro and Francesca (Mascaro) Fiato. He was educated in Herkimer schools. He enlisted in the United States Army on January 29, 1941 during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 4, 1945 after four years of service to his country. Mr. Fiato was a life-long resident of Herkimer. Mr. Fiato was united in marriage to Rose Mammone in 1945 at St. Joseph's Church in Oneida with Father Laura officiating. They shared a blessed union of 24 years, until her passing in October of 1969. He was formerly employed as a cabinet maker for Standard Furniture and retired after 38 years of service. He was also owner of Fiato Floor and Refinishing in Herkimer and you may have seen him helping out at Studio 30 Lounge, formerly in Herkimer, where he enjoyed dancing and watching the patrons enjoying themselves. Mr. Fiato was a former Commander at Anthony R. George Post 6 and a member of the Michael S. Pliseck, V.F.W. Post 4915. For 50 years, he was a member of the Mohawk Valley Umpire Association. Most importantly, he was a loving and special father and grandfather to his family. Mr. Fiato was interested in many hobbies. He enjoyed his garden especially his passion for growing garlic, and enjoyed woodworking. He also prided himself on being an umpire for little league, high school, college and semi-pro baseball for many years. He is survived by his beloved children, Rocco A. Fiato and his wife Marcia of Basking Ridge, NJ, Francis A. (Rocky) Fiato and his wife Barbara of Herkimer, NY, Alex Fiato and his wife Beth of Fort Wayne, IN, Joseph Fiato and his wife Melanie of Oneida, NY, and Mary Rogers and her husband Rick of Venice, FL; a brother, Vincent (Jimmie) Fiato of New Mexico; a sister, Caroline Fiato of Herkimer; his five loving grandchildren, Rocco and Natalie Fiato, Rocco Fiato III, Elizabeth Rose Fiato, and Alexandria Fiato; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws including Frank Mammone. He was predeceased by Pat Fiato, Mary Fiato Savo, Katherine Fiato Peruzzi, Dominick (Sheriff) Fiato, Alex Fiato, Jr., and several other childhood siblings. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visitation at the Holleran & Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 from 5-8 p.m. Mr. Fiato's funeral will commence on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 12:15 p.m. where prayer will be offered and at 1 p.m. at Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Vail, officiating. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery in Herkimer, where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, friends and relatives may consider memorial contributions to the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. Envelops will be available at the funeral home.
