Obituary of Virginia Handsbury

Virginia B. Handsbury, age 87, formerly a longtime resident of McCann St., Ilion, passed away Tuesday morning, November 15, 2005, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer. Virginia was born in Herkimer, daughter of the late Fred C. and Susanna (Hornick) Handsbury on January 9, 1918. She was a graduate of Mohawk High School "Class of 1937." Virginia continued her education as a graduate of the Brooklyn State Hospital School of Nursing and ultimately received her Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University. She retired in 1978 from the Mohawk school system after serving as the school nurse and teacher. Virginia was a devoted parishioner of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, Ilion, and its Altar Guild. She was also a member of the AARP, and the Mohawk Central School Retired Teachers Assoc. and the New York State Retired Teachers Assoc. Virginia is survived by several cousins; and was blessed with many friends throughout the years, including Kathie and David Marmet and their children, Matthew and John, Joseph and Mary Plano, and Ginger Dutcher, all of Mohawk. She was predeceased by her parents; one brother, Rev. Willis J. Handsbury; and two sisters, Josephine Arnold and Jennie Morus. Virginia's funeral service will be held Friday, November 18, 2005, commencing at 1:30 p.m. at the APPLEGATE & DAY FUNERAL HOME, 102 West St., Ilion, and 2 p.m. at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church with Father Thomas Trees, Rector, officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the funeral home prior to her funeral service. Procession to Oak Hill Cemetery for interment will follow the service. Memorial contributions may be made in Virginia's name to St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
