Obituary of William Karla

Mr. William Robert Karla 87 of 18 Timmerman Street Dolgeville, died Wednesday afternoon January 26, 2005 at his residence of natural causes. Bob was born in Dolgeville, on January 11, 1918 the son of William and Vernie (Coppernoll) Karla and attended Dolgeville schools. A veteran of WW II he served honorably from January 1944 until he was discharged in December 1945, with the rank of Ship Fitter 2nd class. He served in the Pacific Theater, and participated in the invasion of Saipan, Tinian Guam and Okinawa, serving aboard the LST 485. He earned the following service medals, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon w/two Stars, American Area Ribbon and the Amphibious Force Insignia. His marriage to the former Mary E. Wonderling took place on October 13, 1939 in the Methodist Parsonage in Salisbury center. The Rev. Merle Brown performed the ceremony. His wife Mary of 65 years predeceased him this past week on January18, 2005. The Dolgeville Central School System employed Bob as superintendent of the Bus Garage from 1957 until he retired in February 1980. He was a Charter member of the Dolgeville Volunteer and Exempt Fireman?s Benevolent Association, The Civil Service Employees association, the Association of Retired Persons, and the Amphibious Force association. He was an exempt Volunteer Fireman having served in the former Alfred Dolge Hose Company. Surviving him is his Son and his wife Robert J. and Norma Karla of Ilion, a Brother Edward Karla of Dolgeville his Sister in Laws Virginia (Estey) Karla and Dorothy Karla Hodge both of Dolgeville, his Grandchildren Jodi Lynn and her husband Mark Arsenault of Newport, Sean Robert and his wife Jody Karla of Syracuse, his Great Grandsons Tyler and Kyle, N & N. He was predeceased by his brothers Hugh Karla in 1975 and Richard Karla in 1988. Graveside services will be held in the Spring in the Dolgeville Cemetery at the convenice of the family.
