Obituary of Clare Mantello
Clare S. Mantello, age 89, formerly of Maple Grove Ave., Herkimer, passed away Friday morning, January 21, 2005, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer. Clare was born May 3, 1915 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Casadonte) Sanzo. She was a graduate of Herkimer High School and a lifelong area resident. On November 27, 1937 she was married to Ralph Mantello, a blessed union of 43 years until Mr. Mantello's passing in 1980. Clare was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Francis DeSales Church, and at one time a member of its Rosary Society. She was an exceptional seamstress and was once employed as a dressmaker at Joy-Taylor Co. in Mohawk. Clare was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and an original member of the Valley Helpers at Valley Health Services. Clare loved to read. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed a good game of cards. She lovingly cared for others, often babysitting children in her home. A devoted homemaker, wife, and mother, Clare's life was centered around her beloved family and friends. She was known as the protector of the family, standing up for her loved ones and making sure of their safety and well-being. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and loved her. Clare is survived by one sister, Agnes Chizzonite; a daughter, Mary Jennifer Eaton, Gloversville; a daughter-in-law, Chandra Mantell, N.C.; six cherished grandchildren, Linda Shepherd, Susan Black and husband, Charles, Michael Mantell and wife, Janet, Jennifer DeSorbo and Bill Baird, Amanda Mason and husband, Ryan, and Allison Eaton and fiance, Kyle MacVean. She leaves her great-grandchildren, Mark, Michael, and John Shepherd, Charlie and Mary Chandler Black, Jenna Mantell; and one great-great-grandchild, Michaela. She leaves several loving nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Clare was predeceased by her son, Ralph Mantell, Jr.; a sister, Barbara Sanzo; her infant sister, Clara; as well as two brothers, Nick and Joseph Sanzo, Jr. Family and friends are invited to visitation Sunday, January 23, 2005, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Clare's funeral services will be held Monday, January 24th, commencing at 9 a.m. at the funeral home and 10 a.m. at St. Francis DeSales Church, Herkimer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, pastor.
