Obituary of Lena Matis

Lena Matis, 87 a long time Town of Oppenhiem resident, passed away on Wednesday February 23, 2005 at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home. She was born May 19, 1917 in St. Johnsville the daughter of the late Giuseppe & Edvige (Cacciotti) & Sindici and was educated at St. Johnsville schools. Her marriage to Daniel Matis, Sr., took place in 1934.Mr. Matis passed away on May 12, 1987. Lena was last employed at the former Keyser Hotel in St. Johnsville. At one time she worked at various factories including Tricot and the former Palatine Dye Company. For many years she worked with her husband and family running the family farm. Mrs. Matis was a member of St. Patrick?s Church. Mrs. Matis was a former member of the St. Johnsville Senior Saints and the Oppenheim Pocahontas. In her leisure she enjoyed cooking, gardening and tending to her flowers. Survivors include 2 sons; Daniel Matis, Jr. and wife Maxine of St. Johnsville, & Timothy Matis and Nancy Cole of St. Johnsville, 2 daughters; Pauline Smith and husband Melvin of New Hartford, and Sharon Zimmer of Chittenango, NY, 2 sisters; Susie Corso of St. Johnsville, & Viola Perry of East Herkimer, 10 grandchildren; Dana Shimkus, Paula Dufault, Paul Brian Matis, Dina Brundage, Raymond Matis, Ann Marie Amtis, Diane Zimmer, Rebecca Zimmer, Dain Zimmer, & Jordan Matis, 13 great grandchildren, many nieces, & nephews & in-laws; George & Frances Matis of St. Johnsville, & Alice Matis of Dolgeville. She was pre-deceased by a sister Rose Perry and a son-in-law; Richard Zimmer. Funeral services will be held on Friday February 25, 2005 at 2:00 pm from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY. Spring interment will be in St. Johnsville Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Friday February 25, 2005 from 12:00 noon until the time of the services. All memorial contributions may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Research or to a charity of one?s choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
