Obituary of Helen McCabe

Helen M. McCabe, age 87, a longtime resident of 20 Newton St., Ilion, passed away Wednesday evening, October 26, 2005, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, Town of New Hartford. Helen was born July 3, 1918 in Vestal, NY, daughter of Raymond E. and Hazel (Weber) Briggs. She was a graduate of Newark Valley High School, and was a graduate of the Nursing Program at Binghatom State Hospital where she earned her Registered Nurse Certification. On November 8, 1941, she was united in marriage to Vincent P. McCabe at St. John's Church in Beacon, NY. They shared a blessed and loving union of 63 years. Helen was last employed as a RN at the Mohawk Valley General Hospital for 22 years until her retirement in 1976. Prior to that she worked as an RN in White Plains and Binghamton, devoting approximately 30 dedicated years to the Nursing profession. She was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, enjoyed sewing and knitting, and loved to travel with her husband, Vince crossing the country many times. Survivors include her husband, Vincent P. McCabe at home; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Ellen McCabe of Binghamton; one daughter, Susan Weiner of Naples, FL; her cherished grandchildren, Robert McCabe and his wife, Traci, Paul McCabe, Emily Goyne and her husband, Thomas, Thomas McCabe and his wife, Lisa, and Ryan Weiner; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Scott McCabe; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Marion Briggs of Millerton, Roy Briggs of Newark Valley, David and Mary Briggs of Delmar and Kathleen Staniewicz of Hawaii; and 20 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Vincent in 1953; her son-in-law, Barry Weiner; and her brothers, Kenneth and Carl Briggs, Harold Briggs who was killed in WWII and Norman Briggs who was killed in the Korean Conflict. Family and friends are invited to visitation Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Helen's funeral service will be held Saturday commencing at 9:15 a.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation where Father Alfred Lammana will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial. Procession to St. Agnes Cemetery for interment will follow Mass. In lieu of floral offerings, please consider memorials in Helen's name to the charity of your choice.
