Obituary of Eva Mumford
Eva H. Mumford, a long time resident of 40 Marshall Ave. in Mohawk, passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2005, at University Medical Center in Syracuse. She was 85. Eva was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Prospect, N.Y., daughter of the late William and Verna (Johnson) Hager. After graduating from Utica schools, she enrolled in the nursing program at the Utica State Hospital and became a registered nurse, dedicating herself to that profession for over 50 years. On Jan. 17, 1942, she married Orville Mumford in Elizabeth, N.J., a blessed union of 37 years until Mr. Mumford's passing on Feb. 21, 1979. During World War II, Eva served as a nurse at Kings County Hospital in New York City and at a hospital in New Orleans. She was a charge nurse for the coronary/critical care unit at the Herkimer Memorial Hospital for over 40 years before retiring from Valley Health Services in 1992. A devoted and loving mom and grandma, Eva's life touched many and was centered on her beloved family. At one time, she was a Brownie and Cub Scout mother, and volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Bank. She loved refinishing antique furniture and enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls, cooking and baking, sewing, reading and doing crossword puzzles. Eva will always be remembered for her love of nature. Whether camping in the Adirondacks or watching birds from her kitchen window, she found great comfort in the outdoors. Survivors include her devoted children, Janet Arndt and her husband Denny Arndt, whom Eva loved as a son, and her son Ray Mumford and Audrey Cole of Williamstown. Her cherished grandchildren include Kristin Sawka and her husband Michael of Pennsylvania, Brad Arndt and his girlfriend Sarah Hall of Massachusetts, Patrick Mumford and his wife Heather of Virginia, and Paul Mumford and his wife Aimee of Parish. Eva also leaves behind her sister and brother-in-law Betty and Lysle Parker of Edmeston, and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Doris Hager of California, Gertrude Harrer of Clinton, and Harold and Olive Mumford of Herkimer, as well as several nieces, nephews, and her long time friend Betty Butts of Virginia. Eva was predeceased by her husband and by her siblings, Helen, Florence, Viola, Eleanor, Mickey, Bill, George and Fritz. Family and friends are invited to visitation on Sunday, June 19, from 1-4 p.m. at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk.
