Obituary of Russell Ostrander

Russell E. "Russ" Ostrander, age 88, currently residing at Sherwood Acres, Herkimer, formerly a longtime Mohawk resident passed away Thursday, June 30, 2005. Russ was born June 22, 1917 in the Town of Warren, son of Ivan and Rena (Wiles) Ostrander. He was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School, and completed his education in Banking and Finance through his professional career earning many certifications and accreditations. Russ was a proud veteran of WWII serving as a Tech. Sgt. with the U.S. Army. On October 10, 1942, Russ was united in marriage to Margaret Campeau in New York City, a blessed and devoted union of over 62 years. Russell began his career in banking and finance at the Hanover Bank in New York City in 1934, and retired in 1982 after devoting 48 years to the profession he loved. He was last employed by the Norstar Bank in Utica as a Vice President, prior to that Russ was employed by the Oneida National Banks in Mohawk and Ilion for many years, eventually serving as Branch Manager at both locations. He was a life member of the Mohawk American Legion Post 25, a charter member of the Mohawk Kiwanis Club, Ilion Elks Lodge 1444, several banking organizations and affiliations. Russ loved to golf, and was proud of his 16th hole, 210 yard hole-in-one at Cedar Lake. He was also known to be Wayne Levi's biggest fan. His life was always centered around his beloved family and friends. Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret at home; three sons, Richard Ostrander and his wife, Michele of Ilion, Robert Ostrander of Herkimer, and Gary Ostrander and his wife, Pam of NC; his cherished grandchildren, Kerry Schmidt and her husband, Bill of Whitesboro, Sharon Ostrander of MD, Teresa Ostrander of Rochester, Jim Ostrander of Utica, and Rob Ostrander of VT; two great-grandchildren, Jeff and Steven Schmidt; three sisters-in-law, Dolly Piper of NJ, Millie Piper of Mohawk, and Marjorie Ostrander of the Town of Warren; several nieces and nephews and cousins, many good friends and golfing buddies. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ida Kapp, Helen Dutcher; and his brother Glen Ostrander. Russell's funeral service will be held Saturday, July 2nd commencing at 11 a.m. at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk, with Father Mark Cunningham officiating. Procession to Mohawk Cemetery for interment with full Military Honors will follow the service. Family and friends are invited to visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. The Mohawk American Legion services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of floral offerings please consider memorials in Russ's name to the American Cancer Society.
