Obituary of Michael Rapacz
Michael Rapacz, Jr., 82, passed away Dec. 3, 2005 at St. Johnsville Nursing Home after a long illness. A longtime resident of 1742 Mill Road, since May, 1997 he was a resident of St. Johnsville Nursing Home. One of eight children of Michael and Julia (Yanko) Rapacz, he was born in St. Johnsville June 25, 1923. A graduate of St. Johnsville High School, class of 1941, he attended Union College in Schenectady before enlisting in the U.S. Army on Dec. 15, 1942. Mike served with the 742nd Amphibious Tank Battalion as a tank commander, and attained the rank of sergeant. He received an honorable discharge on Feb. 24, 1946. On Oct. 26, 1946, he was united in marriage with Mary Politylo in St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Herkimer. Mike was a partner in the family grocery business in St. Johnsville, first with his father and later with his son, Mathew. The business closed on his retirement in July, 1990. He was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Herkimer; Morris J. Edwards American Legion Post, St. Johnsville; and at one time was a member of the Town of St. Johnsville Planning Board. Survivors include his wife Mary, of St. Johnsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Ronald Butkovich of Southold; a son, Mathew of St. Johnsville; two grandchildren, Stephen Butkovich of Deer Park and Laryssa Butkovich of Southold; two brothers and their wives, Raymond and Eleanor Rapacz of Ocala, Fla. and Richard and Mary Rapacz of Essex Junction, Vt.; one sister and her husband, Anna and Michael Politylo of Herkimer; nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. He was predeceased by brothers Michael and John, and sisters Rose and Helen. Friends and relatives may call at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, on Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 5-8 p.m. His funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. on Dec.7 in St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Moore Ave., Herkimer. Interment will follow in St. Johnsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church or the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, Residents Council. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
