Obituary of Ruth Riddell

Ruth A. Riddell, age 95, a lifelong Ilion resident, passed away Monday, November 28, 2005, at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion. Ruth was born January 6, 1910 in Ilion, daughter of Thomas and Alice (Donahue) Hathaway. She attended Ilion schools. On August 8, 1941, Ruth was united in marriage to James A. "Cappy" Riddell in Alabama. They shared a dedicated and loving union of 37 years until Mr. Riddell's passing on June 25, 1978. Ruth was last employed by the Folts Home in Herkimer, retiring in 1976. She was a life member of the Ilion First United Methodist Church, a life member of the Ilion-Frankfort Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 502 Auxiliary, enjoyed playing bingo, going to the casino, and being with her loving family and all the pets. Survivors include her two daughters and one son-in-law, Joyce and Robert Gage of Ilion and Christine Brownrigg and her significant other, Joseph Kalinowski, both from the Town of Frankfort; one son and daughter-in-law, James "Tom" and Roberta Riddell of Mohawk; ten cherished grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Carlton Rank; her sister, Lillian Hathaway; two brothers, Frank and Thomas Hathaway, Jr.; one grandson, James R. Gage; and one great-grandson, Steven Scaparo. Family and friends are invited to visitation Thursday, December 1st from 4-7 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Ruth's funeral service will be held Thursday commencing at 7 p.m. at the funeral home following visitation with Rev. Hans Drews officiating. Interment will be held privately in Mt. View Memorial Gardens. The Ilion-Frankfort VFW Auxiliary service will be Thursday 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of floral offerings, please consider memorials in Ruth's name to the "Ilion Ambulance Fund." Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Ruth's family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staffs at St. Luke's and the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home (especially 3rd floor) for their care and compassion, and also to her nurse, Connie at MVNH who Ruth and her family trusted completely.
