Obituary of Leona Slaughter

Leona (DeSantos) Slaughter, age 94, formerly of Jerusalem Hill Rd., Litchfield, died Friday, July 8, 2005, at the Radius Healthcare in Southbridge, MA. She was born on July 29, 1910 in Litchfield, NY, the daughter of Benjamin and Giffiy (Mathews) Richards and attended Cranes Corners School in Litchfield. In 1928, she married Joseph DeSantos; he died in 1972. In 1975, she married Alan Slaughter; he died in 1989. Leona was town clerk in Litchfield for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church of Ilion, Litchfield Grange, Frankfort Rebeccah Lodge, and the Cedarville Fire Dept. Auxiliary. Leona was superintendent of the Litchfield Cemetery Association for many years. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Cynthia DeSantos of Charlton, MA; three grandchildren, Ted DeSantos and his wife, Amy, of Vernon, CT, Terry Salonis and her husband, Al, of Dudley, MA, Thomas DeSantos and his wife, Shanna, of Middletown, CT; four great-grandchildren, Albert William Salonis III, Joseph Paul Salonis, Ellie Lynn DeSantos, and Samuel Paul DeSantos; her sister, Marion Schooley of Herkimer; a niece, a nephew, a grandniece, a grandnephew, and a great-grandnephew. She was predeceased by her brother, Homer Richards; her sister, Aldah Richards; her brother-in-law, Lester Schooley; and her nephew, Gary Schooley. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Rev. Thomas Trees, Rector of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will be in Litchfield Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m., prior to the service.
