Obituary of John Smallwood
John "Yohno" F. Smallwood, 79, of North Reading, Mass., formerly of Ilion, Syracuse, Buffalo and Boston, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Mass. He was born June 30, 1925, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Frank and Clara (Ostenkamp) Smallwood. John graduated from Ilion High School, Utica College and Syracuse University. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1944-46 as a private first class and acting squad leader. John served in Europe, participated in the Battle of the Bulge and received two Purple Hearts. On Thanksgiving Day in 1946, he was married to Katherine "Kay" Ochodnicky (of Little Falls) in Ilion. For over 30 years John was employed with the IRS, working as an auditor and group manager. He retired as the assistant division chief in the Boston office of the IRS. After his retirement, John was the administrator of the Thomson Country Club, North Reading, Mass., and most recently worked as an accountant for Bill Flynn Golf Courses. At one time he was a member of the Tuscarora Country Club in Camillus. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Katherine "Kay"; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and John Hobson of Falmouth, Mass., Judy Smallwood and husband Jerry Bowles of Luray, Va.; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and George Comins of Ilion; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Helen Smallwood of Medfield, Mass., Robert and Michelle Smallwood of Rochester; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Hobson of San Diego, Calif., Greg Hobson of Portland, Maine and Katherine Bowles of Luray, Va.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday (today) at the Croswell Funeral Home, North Reading, Mass. and 10:30 a.m. at St. Theresa's Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, North Reading, Mass. Calling hours were held Friday from 4-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, Mass. 02140-1102.
