Obituary of Albert Smith

Albert "Al" W. Smith, 80, formerly of 201 E. North St., Ilion, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. He was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Chester, N.J., the son of Aill and Marion E. (Wyckoff) Smith, and attended Chester, N.J., schools. At one time he was a construction worker and truck driver at Olsen-Lawson Construction Co. in Dover, N.J. He also worked at the New York State Department of Forestry until 1991, and was later employed at the Union Fork and Hoe Co. of Frankfort. Mr. Smith was a past member of the Ilion Moose Lodge and the New York State Sheriff's Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and taking care of his dog, "Midnite." Survivors include his sister, Mary Isel of Little Silver, N.J.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends, Paula Hagadorn of Herkimer and her daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Ed Sterling Jr. and their children, Joe and Brianna Sterling, all of Ilion; her son, Ron Hagadorn Jr. of Fort Plain; and close friends, Sharron Matthews of Ilion and her son Edward Matthews and his children, Janice and Jamie, all of Minnesota; her two daughters and one son-in-law, Cheryl and Don Owens Jr. and their children, Brandon, Christian and Briana, all of North Carolina and Sandra Matthews and her children, Derek and Chanin Rice and Brook Matthews, all of Herkimer; and close friends, Donna and Bob Adams of Edmeston. He was predeceased by his brothers, Louis Wyckoff and George Smith and special friend and companion, Frances Eddy. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. at the Applegate and Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:30-4 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Albert's name to St. Jude's Research Hospital for Children. Donation envelopes are available at the funeral home.
