Obituary of Elizabeth Smith

Elizabeth C. "Betty" Smith, 84 of 149 Howard Road, St. Johnsville passed away on Thursday July 28, 2005 at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home with her loving family by her side. She was born March 20, 1921 in the Town of Charleston, NY the daughter of the late Oscar & Jane (Gros) Alkinburgh and was educated at Lassellsville Country schools. Her marriage to Howard N. Smith took place on October 6, 1940 in Scotchbush, NY. The couple shared a blessed union of 64 years until the passing of Mr. Smith on October 9, 2004. Betty worked for various knitting mills throughout the valley. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Scotchbush Free Methodist Church and the Lassellsville Senior Citizens. Survivors include 2 sons; Harry Smith and wife Shannon of Amsterdam, & David R. Smith and wife Betty of Lassellsville, 3 daughters; Alice Gallt and husband Charles of Lassellsville, Bessie Getman and husband Dayton of Lassellsville, & Naomi Abare of Richfield Springs, 15 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, a great great grandchild and several nieces, nephews & cousins. She is also survived by her step-mother Dorothy Calhoun of Gloversville, her step-brothers & step-sisters; Larry Alkinburg of Perth, Gene Arthur Alkinburg of California, Ruth Smith of Albany June Ruby of Meco, Carol Murray & Donna Van Alstyne both of Gloversville, and a sister-in-law Jennie Alkinburg of Glens Falls. She was pre-deceased by her sons; William & Howard Smith, Jr., a grandson, Kyle Smith, Great grandson Greg Getman, her sister, Edith VanHosen, her brothers, Richard & Cyrus Alkinburg, and a step-brother, Dean Alkinburg. Funeral services will be held on Monday August 1, 2005 at 1:00 pm from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY with Reverend R.W. Williams, of Mt. Valley Hospice, officiating. Burial will be in Fical Cemetery, Town of Ephratah. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday July 31, 2005 from 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers all memorial contributions may be made to the Rockwood, Caroga, Lassellsville Volunteer Fire Department or to a charity of one's choice.
