Obituary of Barrie Sweet

Barrie W. Sweet, age 86, a longtime resident of 17 Henry St., Mohawk, passed away Friday, September 16, 2005, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. Barrie was born August 19, 1919 in the Town of Bangor, son of Fay and Floy (Anderson) Sweet. He was a graduate of Franklin Academy, Malone, NY, and St. Lawrence University, Class of 1941. Barrie was a veteran of WWII serving as a Staff Sgt. with the 326th Airdrome Squadron of the 10th Air Force, in the China, Burma, India Theater of War. He later served as Staff Sgt. in the Air Force Reserve from 1950 to 1953. On May 26, 1951, he was united in marriage to Evelyn (Evie) Kovac in the Mohawk Reformed Church, a blessed union of 54 years. Barrie was employed by GE in Utica as an accountant, and was later employed by MDS in Herkimer retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church, Mohawk American Legion Post 25, Former Member of Ilion Masonic Lodge, and the Ilion Moose Lodge 1010, he was a charter member of the WWII Memorial. Barrie was an avid NY Giants fan, and enjoyed following horse racing. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry F. Sweet and his wife, Sandy of Jamestown, and Dale J. Sweet and his wife, Nancy of Weedsport; grandsons, Andrew and Adam Sweet of Weedsport, and Bryan Sweet of Olean; his step-son, Lynn Terry of VA; one brother, Jack Sweet of MD; his brothers-in-law, Sam and Marty Kovac both of Mohawk; several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy Sweet and Norma Farquar. Family and friends are invited to visitation Monday, September 19th from 5-8 p.m. at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk. Barrie's funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Mohawk Reformed Church with Pastor Brian Engel and Elder Ken Palmer officiating. Interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery at a later date. The Mohawk American Legion service will be held Monday 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
