Obituary of Dorothy DerKar

Mrs. Dorothy A. Van DerKar, 100, a resident of the Mohawk Homestead since May 2004, and formerly of 30 Spring Street, Fort Plain, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, in Little Falls Hospital. She was born in Brooklyn on September 14, 1904, the daughter of Robert and Mina (Keller) Gallagher, and attended schools there. Her marriage to Lee 0. Van DerKar took place many years ago and he has predeceased her. Mrs. Van DerKar was a legal secretary for the law firm of Kirkpatrick & Kirkpatrick prior to her retirement several years ago. Previously she was employed by the firm of the Ralph G. Failing Law Office. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Fort Plain, a member of the former Pythian Sisters of Fort Plain and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary of Fort Plain. Surviving her are nieces and nephews, among those are Douglas Van DerKar of Hoosick Falls, and a son-in-law, Burton Rumrill of Richfield Springs. She was predeceased by a daughter, Roberta "Bobby" Rumrill, on August 7, 1996. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 29, at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 36 Lydius St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will be private in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Hoosick Falls, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in her name.
