Obituary of Mary D?Avanzo
Mary McGee D?Avanzo, 64 of 1602 Kringsbush Road, St. Johnsville, passed away on Tuesday September 28, 2004 at her home with her family by her side. Mary was born February 5, 1940 in St. Johnsville the daughter of William ?Bart? and Lynn McGee. She was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, class of 1957. She then received her Masters? in Elementary Education from Oneonta State University. Mary began her teaching career in Oppenheim ? Ephratah and in Fort Plain School districts. She later taught in Delhi, NY and then in Bowie, Md., where she became the Director of the Head Start Program. In the early 1980?s she traveled throughout the Southern States conducting Educational studies for the Federal Government. She retired in 1985. Her marriage to Peter Louis D?Avanzo took place on January 19, 1985 in Albany, NY. For her remaining years she spent traveling throughout North and South America with her beloved husband Peter, family and good friends. Mary was also a member of the Red Hat Society which she very much enjoyed. She was also an avid scuba diver belonging to the Adirondack Aquanautical Society. She participated in this hobby with several of her grandchildren and many club friends. Mary was a member of St. Patrick?s Church in St. Johnsville. Survivors include her husband of 19 years, Peter, 2 sons; Bart Bowen and friend Crystal Davis of Fort Plain, & Matthew Bowen and wife Amy of Utica, her step-children, Peter D?Avanzo and wife Elizabeth of East Durham, NY, Daradean D?Avanzo of Albany, and Danna Ryan and husband Brian of East Durham, NY; a brother Patrick McGee and wife Lisa of Meco, Florida, 13 grandchildren; Meagan, Noah & Kimberly Bowen; Ryan, Stephanie Adam & Nicholas Bowen; Nicholas & Frankie D?Avanzo; Brian & Dominique Ryan; & Danielle & Danny D?Avanzo and many nieces, nephews & cousins. Memorial mass will be held on Friday October 1, 2004 at 9:00 am from St. Patrick?s Church. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends and relatives are invited to pay their respects to the family on Thursday September 30, 2004 from 6-8 pm at the Smith ? Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY. All memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Mary was blessed with many loving and caring friends.
