Obituary of John Luppino

Mr. John J. Luppino, age 87 of 151 Summit Street, Mohawk (Manion Heights) passed away on Thursday evening December 2, 2004 at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home in Ilion. He was born on August 31, 1917 in Herkimer, a son of the late Antonio & Auroria (Graziano) Luppino and was educated in local schools, having at one time attended the Fort Herkimer school. He had been a lifelong area resident. John was a veteran of the United States Army, having served our country during World War II. He was very proud to be able to have served his country. He landed on June 8th in Normandy and had participated in battles throughout Europe and had fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a tank mechanic with the 3rd Armor Division. John was honorably discharged on Oct. 7, 1945 and upon relief from active duty held the rank of technician 3rd Grade, Company C, 423rd Infantry. On July 7, 1946 John joined in marriage with Mary "Carm" DeNinno at St. Joseph's Churh in Dolgeville. The couple had shared in a blessed union of over 58 years together. From 1938 until 1985, nearly a fifty year span, John owned and operated Luppino's Service Station and fuel oil, located in Manion Heights. He thoroughly enjoyed working as a mechanic, a trait he was able to pass down to his grandson Mike who carries on the tradition. John was a member of the Herkimer Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post #4915 and was of the Catholic faith. He is survived by his beloved family including his wife: Carm; two daughters and a son in law: Mary Davis and her husband Bill and Linda Wood all of Manion Heights; his grandchildren: Christopher Davis and his wife Lisa, Michael Davis and his wife Karlee, and Ann Lee Bardo and her husband David; great grandchildren: David, Eric, and Paige; a sister Rose Cushman of Mohawk; In Laws: Eva Luppino and Rose Luppino of Mohawk; and many very special nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Joseph, Frank, and Phil Luppino, and a son in law: Eric Wood. Funeral services with full military honors will be held on Monday December 6, 2004 at 9:00 AM from the Holleran - Enea Funeral Home 220 North Washington Street, Herkimer, and at 9:30 AM from the Church of Sts. Anthony & Joseph, South Main Street, Herkimer, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato, Pastor, Celebrating his Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the funeral home on Sunday evening, Dec. 5th from 4 - 7 PM. Members of the Herkimer VFW Post are asked to gather Sunday evening 6:00 Pm at the funeral home for services. The family extends their thanks to the 3rd Floor staff of the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, and Dr. Ward and Dr. Raymond of Bassett Healthcare for the care offered.
