Obituary of John Mahoney

John "Jack" B. Mahoney, 88, of 147 Brook St., died Friday, July 23, 2004, at Faulkner Hospital, Boston, after a brief illness. He was born on Jan. 10, 1916 in Utica, the son of John and Mary (Schofield) Mahoney, and attended Utica Schools and Clarkson College. At one time he was married to Eleanor Kallies, who passed away in 1982. He later married Frances (Wood) Barnes in 1988. She died on Nov. 11, 2003. John was employed as a district engineer at New York Telephone Co. in Utica, Herkimer, Watertown, Albany and Oneonta for 45 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion serving as a lector and active in the CCD program and a member of the Bingo Committee. John was also active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), team manager in Babe Ruth Baseball and delivered Meals on Wheels to the elderly in Ilion. Survivors include his daughter, Mary Helen Mahoney of Quincy, Mass.; his son, David J. Mahoney of Brooklyn; two step-daughters, Barbara Ann Hatch and her husband Ian of Maryland, and Katherine "Kitty" Tapp and her husband Timothy of Virginia; two step-grandchildren, Christopher Hatch and Kelly Tapp; one step-great grandchild, Sierra Hatch; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Richard Mahoney and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, at the Applegate and Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, and 11 a.m. at the Church of Annunciation where a mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph Benintende. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours are Monday, July 26, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity in John's memory.
