Obituary of John Nagle

John (Bud) Nagle, 87, passed away Friday morning, September 17, 2004, at the Little Falls Hospital. He was born the son of Patrick and Julia (Leader) Nagle on May 13, 1917. John was a lifelong resident of Little Falls and a graduate of St. Mary's Academy, a member of the class of 1935, and was a communicant of the Holy Family Parish. He was married to the former Edith Roginski at the Sacred Heart Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Father Batkiewicz officiating in the nuptial mass on May 13, 1950. He was once employed by Hanson's Laboratory in Little Falls, and the New York State Thruway during its construction. John also worked for the state Department of Transportation as a supervisor in the maintenance department in Herkimer for 25 years, retiring in 1980. John entered the Army in July 1941 as a volunteer under the Selective Service Act of 1940 and was a World War II veteran. While in the Army, he served his country in various branches. Among them were ordinance, armament, pre-flight and gunnery school at Kingman, Ariz. Combat crews were made up in Lincoln, Neb., and they trained as a unit in Pueblo, Colo. They were attached to the 15th Air Corps and sent to Africa and southern Italy. He saw action in the skies over Germany and other parts of Europe as an aerial gunner. After completing 50 missions, he was honorably discharged in May 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. His decorations and citations include medals from the Southern France and African campaigns, along with Rome, Arno-Germany and Air Combat campaigns and a Presidential Unit Citation. Also a scroll from the Greek Government with a medal attached and an Air Medal with three oak-leaf clusters. Also awarded were the American Defense, Good Conduct, Victory and Pistol Marksmanship medals. He is survived by his loving wife Edith; three sons, Lt. Col. (ret) John P. Nagle, his wife Cheryl and four daughters, Katlyn, Elizabeth, Jacklyn and Julia of Huntsville, Ala., Tom, his wife Sherry and their son CPT Tom Nagle, US Army, his wife Jennifer and their children Alyssa and Tommy of Fort Polk, La., and David, his wife Chris and their three children, Karen, Jennifer and Patrick of Owego; a daughter Wendy Nagle, of Brick, NJ; and a sister, Mary Nagle, of Little Falls. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at 10:15 a.m. from the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, and at 11 a.m. from the Holy Family Parish (on the corner of Main and John streets), where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato, pastor. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, from 5-8 p.m. All memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Parish Memorial Fund or to Little Falls Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of the Little Falls American Legion Post no. 31 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Sunday for services.
