Obituary of Shirley Newman
Shirley G. Newman, age 80, of 4 Crescent Street, Ilion, died Saturday, December 18, 2004 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, St. Luke's Campus, New Hartford. She was born on December 26, 1923 in Oneonta, the daughter of Harry and Ethel (Sommers) Fisk and graduated from Binghamton High School. On May 12, 1945, she was married to Merton "Mert" Newman in Callicoon, NY. In her early years, Shirley was employed as a final inspector at IBM in Endicott, NY, for four years. She was later employed as a key punch operator at Bendix Corp. in Philadelphia, PA. Shirley attended the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, and was a member and actress in the Ilion Little Theater Club. She was an antique dealer for over fifty years. Although she treasured her camp at the lake, real estate, antiques and her dogs, her main focus in life was her family. Shirley was a loving wife, mother and grandmother with a zest for life that made her family and friends want to be near her. Survivors include her husband, Mert; two daughters, Nancy Rosenberg and her husband Marc, Susan Kane and her husband Phil, all of Herkimer; two sons, Brad Newman and his wife Donna, Craig Newman and his wife Tryce, all of Herkimer; eight grandchildren, David Rosenberg and Becky Beley, Matt and Kristen Kane, Ryan and Nicole Newman, Alyce and Derek Newman; great-granddaughter, Mackenzie; her uncle, Maurice Nichols of Oneonta; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Jeanne Waldroff; her brother-in-law, Earl Waldroff; and her mother and father. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Father Mark Cunningham officiating. Interment will be in North Columbia Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, December 21, 2004 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Mohawk Homestead, the staff at Valley Health Services, the second floor staff at Mohawk Valley Nursing Home in Ilion and Dr. Kachare and the staff at St. Luke's Hospital.
