Obituary of August Schmidt

Mr. August "Gussy" W. Schmidt, 83, passed away Thursday, April 1, 2004, at St. Luke's-Memorial Hospital in Utica. Born in Syracuse on April 23, 1920, Gussy was the son of the late August and Julia (Peach) Schmidt. He spent most of his life in the Herkimer area. Gussy was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country in World War II. He received his honorable discharge on Nov. 30, 1945, with the rank of corporal. On Sept. 5, 1997, he was joined in marriage with Ida Hoffman in Herkimer. Mr. Schmidt was last employed with the village of Herkimer, retiring in 1985. Gussy and Ida shared a wonderful relationship. He was a loving husband who enjoyed fishing on the St. Lawrence River with his wife and also loved to hunt in his leisure time. Mr. Schmidt was a life member of the Michael S. Pliseck Post 4915 VFW in Herkimer. Surviving are his beloved wife, Ida of Mohawk; three stepdaughters, Sandra Salatino and husband Joseph of Utica, Linda Spatto and husband Frank of Mohawk and Sharon Chavers and husband Ronald of Baltimore, Md.; six step-grandchildren, Lynnell Goss, Frank A. Spatto and fianc? Kimberly Gazzal, Ryan Spatto and wife Amber, Adam Spatto and wife Jessica, Derek Sacgesser and Jennifer Keeney and husband Jeff; two step-great-grandchildren, Jacob and Justin Keeney. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 5, at 11 a.m. at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 North Washington St., Herkimer, with the Rev. David Kirkpatrick, chaplain of the Masonic Care Community, officiating. Interment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery following the service. Calling hours will be Sunday, April 4, from 5-8 p.m. Members of the Herkimer VFW are asked to meet at the funeral home at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Gussy's family would like to thank the nurses and staff at St. Luke's-Memorial Hospital for their fine care shown to Gussy during his stay; also special thanks to Dr. Kachere, Kevin and Tom.
