Obituary of Andrew Scialdo

Mr. Andrew "Andy" Scialdo, 86, of 307 S. Main St., Herkimer, went to be with his daughter, Andrea, in heaven on Thursday, April 8, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. His entire loving family was at his bedside at the time of his passing. He was born on July 22, 1917, in Herkimer, son of the late Claudio and Bettina (Comparoni) Scialdo and was educated in Herkimer schools. He had been a lifelong resident of this area. Andy joined in marriage with the former Marie Laura on Sept. 27, 1940, in Dolgeville. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served our country during World War II. Andy was wounded at the Invasion of Normandy and upon relief from active duty in 1945 was the recipient of a Purple Heart and an honorable discharge. Andy was a former member of the Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post in Herkimer. He was a communicant of the Church of Saints Anthony & Joseph in Herkimer. Andy began his working career with C. Scialdo & Sons Contractors in Herkimer, where he worked with his father, Claudio, and his brothers. Following his retirement from there he opened the Velvet Cue, a pool hall in Herkimer. Andy later went to own and operate Andy's Antiques, located in both Herkimer and Saratoga Springs. Andy was a family man whose entire life revolved around his wife, children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Marie; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary and Phyllis Scialdo of Frankfort and Scott Scialdo of Herkimer; grandchildren, Corey Scialdo and wife Heather, Tammi Scialdo, Vanessa Scialdo and Stephen Scialdo; a great-grandson, Dominick Scialdo; a sister, Ida Guzzo of Herkimer; brothers, Mike Scialdo of Mohawk, Marshall Scialdo and wife Lucy of Herkimer, Rudy Scialdo and wife Rena of Herkimer; several nieces, nephews, cousins, a sister-in-law, Yolanda Frezza O'Keefe and family, and special people close to Andrew's heart, Jackie and her two children, John and Rachel. He was predeceased by two brothers, Roland and William Scialdo. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at 10:15 a.m. at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, and at 11 a.m. at the Church of Sts. Anthony & Joseph where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening, April 12, from 4-8 p.m. The family thanks Dr. George Rusyniak (neurosurgeon) and the entire ICU unit at St. Elisabeth Medical Center for the compassion shown.
