Obituary of John Stefanishyn

Mr. John W. Stefanishyn, age 87, of 8 Forge Hill Dr., beloved husband of Stella (Sochacki) Stefanishyn, entered into eternal rest on Friday morning, February 6, 2004 in Faxton Hospital, Utica. At the time of his passing he had his loving family by his side. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on January 18, 1917 a son of the late Mike and Molly Ciganenko. He was a self-educated man who became an engineer at UNIVAC and retired after 37 years of service. John was united in marriage with the former Stella Sochacki in Herkimer and together they shared a blessed union of 62 years. He was of the Catholic faith and a member of the Ilion Elk's Lodge #1444. John was an outgoing and friendly man whose gregarious personality made him a wonderful friend and companion. As a family-oriented man who truly enjoyed his loved ones, he was a good and exemplary husband, father and grandfather, who took his responsibilities very seriously and lived up to them very successfully. John had a love for people that manifested itself in countless thoughtful and generous ways. Mr. Stefanishyn is survived by his beloved wife Stella, his daughters and sons in law, Charlotte and Frank LaPorte and Regina and Sal Nicolette, his beloved grandchildren Lisa Lamica, Nicole Nicolette-Walz, Vanessa Rottenberg and Sean Nicolette, his great grandchildren, Matthew and Zachary Lamica, CJ and Sam Walz and Connor Rottenberg, his sister in law Lucy Maneen and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are many dear friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary French and Ann Sochacki and by a brother in law Sam Maneen of Frankfort. The family will be present in the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main St. between Ilion and Frankfort, on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. John's funeral will commence at 9:30 am on Monday morning, Feb. 9, from Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, South Main St., Herkimer where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Robert Shinos, pastor. He will be laid to rest this spring in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion. The Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion/Frankfort is serving the family. As an alternative to floral tributes, memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Stefanishyn may be made to Hospice Care, Inc. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home. Members of the Ilion Elk's Lodge #1444 will meet at the Enea Family Funeral Home on Sunday ev ening at 7 p.m. to conduct ritualistic services.
