Obituary of Irene Stephan

Mrs. Irene Mae Stephan, 85, a former Dolgeville resident who has been residing with her daughter, Shirley May, at 2 Bunea Vista Ave., Queensbury, since August, died there Monday evening, October 18, 2004. Irene was born in Johnstown on October 14, 1919, the daughter of Guy and Viola (Getman) Smith and was educated in Gloversville schools. She was married twice, first to Lyman Van Gorder on September 6, 1941. He predeceased her on February 25, 1963. She married Carl Stephan on July 3, 1964. He predeceased her on June 20, 1978. Irene was employed by the Daniel Green Shoe Company of Dolgeville for many years, retiring from there in 1981. Upon her retirement she did volunteer work at Parkside Courts and enjoyed bowling, puzzles and bingo with her friends. She was a member of the Warrensburg Free Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter and her husband with whom she resided, Shirley and Roger May of Queensbury; her grandchildren, Colleen Kelly May of Chesapeake, Va., Matthew Lyman May of Portsmouth, Va., Christine and her husband, Paul Chupka, of Amsterdam and Stacey Lynn May of Virginia Beach, Va.; her great-granddaughters, Amber Lynn and Brittany Chupka; her great-grandson, "Little" Paul Chupka; a sister, Lena Ortell of Gloversville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 21, at 1:30 p.m. at the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville. The Rev. Richard Leonard, pastor of the Warrensburg Free Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. It is the wish of the family that Irene be remembered with a donation to the High Peaks Hospice, 286 Glen St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.
