Obituary of Richard Volk

Mr. Richard F. "Dick" Volk, 88, of 181 Main St., Whitesboro, formerly of 34 Sunnyside Dr., Utica, entered into eternal rest on Saturday morning, January 24, 2004. He was born on September 1, 1915, in Little Falls, a son of the late Francis and Mary (Harnett) Volk and graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Little Falls. Richard was first married to Elva Foote, who predeceased him. He was married to the former Bernice Welch on November 8, 1947, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica. They enjoyed a marriage of 46 years, until she passed away on July 8, 1993. Dick started his working career as a bartender at Volk's Hotel in Salisbury. Then, for a time, he worked at the Snyder's Bicycle Factory in Little Falls. He was last employed as a salesman with Canadian Dry, Utica, retiring in 1980, and was of the Catholic Faith. A man always ready to tell a joke, Dick will be remembered for his sense of humor and his Irish, "Happy-Go-Lucky" attitude. Surviving are his brother, Robert and wife, Irene Volk of East Meadows, Long Island; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Herbert Viel of North Chili, NY. Also surviving are six nephews, six nieces, eight great-nephews, and ten great-nieces. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy V. Ives and her husband, Charles Ives of Salisbury. A memorial mass to celebrate Dick's life will be offered this spring at a time to be announced. The family offers their gratitude to the staff of the fourth floor Mohawk Valley Nursing Home in Ilion, for their care and compassion shown to Dick during his stay. The Enea Family Funeral Home, Main St., between Frankfort and Ilion, (894-8000), is serving the family.
