Obituary of John Zajac

Mr. John S. Zajac, age 83, a former longtime resident of King Street in Herkimer, passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning, April 2, 2004 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he had resided since September. He was born on May 6, 1920 in Utica, NY, the son of the late Frank and Victoria (Leniek) Zajac, and received his education in Utica schools. On June 29, 1941, John joined in marriage with the former Jane Pezdek at St. Mary's Church in New York Mills. The couple had shared in a loving union of over 61 years until the passing of Jane on December 21, 2002. He was a World War II Veteran of our country, having served with the United States Navy in the Asiatic - Pacific Theatre. John was honorably discharged on November 1, 1945. At one time John worked with Savage Arms Corp. in Utica. John had moved to Herkimer in 1947. It was there that he and his family began operation of the LaSanitary Bakery on King Street. He was the proprietor of that business until 1968. He had last worked for 15 years with Remington Arms in Ilion as a machine operator. He was a member of the Church of Sts. Anthony & Jospeh in Herkimer, along with being a lifetime member of the Herkimer Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post, a member of the Mohawk Crowley Barnum American Legion Post, and the Ilion Fish & Game Club. John was a kind and generous man and spent many pleasurable moments fishing and hunting. He is survived by his daughter: Joan Zajac of Henderson, Nevada; one brother: Richard Zajac and his wife Olga of Herkimer; two sisters: Irene Mostek of Chicago, Illinois; and Virginia Arcuri of Utica; In Laws: Stella Gates and Gladys Martin; Nephews & Nieces: Gerald Zajac, Richard, Joseph, and Frank Arcuri; Chuck and Rose Leniek; Bill Leniek and Jan, Richard Leniek; Chester Gates, Jr., & Norman Gates. He was predeceased by a brother Edwin Leniek. Funeral services will be held on Saturday April 10, 2004 at 10:00 AM at the Holleran - Enea Funeral Home 220 North Washington Street Herkimer with the Rev. Anthony Ligato, Pastor of the Church of Sts. Anthony & Joseph officiating. Interment will take place in Sts. Stanislaus & Casimir Cemetery in Whitestown, the burial will be held with military rites offered by the United States Navy. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning one hour prior to the funeral service (9-10AM).
