Obituary of Louis Chizzonite
Mr. Louis A. "Cooky" Chizzonite, 87, of 604 Maple Grove Ave., Herkimer, passed away Thursday evening, Jan. 2. 2003, at the Alterra Village at Clare Bridge Cottage in Clinton with his loving family at his side. He was born Feb. 14, 1915, in Little Falls, the son of the late Anthony and Mary Chizzonite. He received his education in Little Falls schools and had been a lifelong area resident. Louis joined in marriage with the former Agnes "Dolly" Sanzo on June 1, 1940, at St. Anthony's Church in Herkimer, with the Rev. Gustav Purificato, officiating. Mr. Chizzonite was a World War II veteran with the United States Army Air Corps and was classified as a flight mechanic and aerial gunner. While in Italy, he also served as a translator. Louis was a foreman with Remington Arms for many years, retiring in February of 1977. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church and had served as a cook with Valley Helpers. He was a lifetime member of the Herkimer Elks Lodge, a member of the AARP, the East Herkimer Senior Citizens and the Herkimer VFW. In his younger years, Cooky had been active with the Boy Scouts He was an avid gardener and had taken great pleasure in all types of games of cards. His family was first and foremost as he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his beloved wife, Agnes; one son, L. David Chizzonite and wife Rosemarie of Baldwinsville; one daughter, Mary Lou VanDerwiel and husband Albert of Herkimer; one brother, Domenick Chizzonite and wife Sue of Little Falls; a sister, Sara Santillo of Herkimer; six grandchildren, Melissa Fryer and husband Jeremy, David A. Chizzonite and wife Shelly, Aaron VanDerwiel and wife Agija, J. Daniel Chizzonite, Mary Kathryn VanDerwiel and Ann Marie Chizzonite; three great-grandchildren, Jenna Fryer and Taylor Fryer and Lucian Chizzonite; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and in-laws, Barbara Sanzo of Saratoga Springs and Clare Mantello of Herkimer. He was predeceased by a brother, Rocco "Rip" Chizzonite and wife Josephine and in-laws, Joseph and Nick Sanzo and Anthony Santillo. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, and at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church, North Bellinger Street, Herkimer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor. Spring interment, with military honors, will be in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Calling hours at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home will be on Sunday from 2-7 p.m. Those wishing, are asked to consider donations in memory of Louis to either the Alzheimer's Association or to a charity of one's choice. The family gratefully acknowledges the staff of Alterra Village at Clare Bridge Cottage for the kindness, compassion and wonderful care offered to Louis during the last one-and-one-half years of his life, especially mentioning Diane Clute, RN. The Herkimer Elks may meet at the funeral home Sunday at 4:30 p.m. for their ritual, the Herkimer VFW at 5, and the East Herkimer seniors may form as a group at 5:30.
