Obituary of Fred Scarano

1924-2003 Mr. Fred Guido Scarano, age 79, formerly of 2 Arthur Street, Little Falls, and most recently residing at 451 State Highway 163, Fort Plain, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, October 9, 2003. He was surrounded with the love and support of his family at his bedside at the time of his passing, which occurred in his home. Fred was born on October 4, 1924 in Little Falls, a son of the late Rocco and Otina (Palma) Scarano. He received his education in Little Falls Schools and attended the Troy Vocational School. On June 27th, 1948, Fred was united in marriage with the former Helen M. Giorgi at St. Joseph's Church in Little Falls. The couple shared a blessed union of 37 years until Helen's untimely passing on October 21st, 1985. He married the former Polly Suchy on July 5th, 1997 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls, a union that was truly blessed with love and happiness. A proud United States Veteran, Fred served with the U.S. Marine Corps, fourth division and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. For his courage under fire and his heroic service, he was the recipient of several ribbons and medals and received an honorable discharge on November 22, 1945, holding the rank of Corporal. He was a member of the Ilion Marine Corps League, the Erie Canal Chapter of the 4th Marine Division Association, and the Herkimer County Detachment Marine Corps League. His last employment was with General Electric in Utica as a tool and die maker, retiring after over 30 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Little Falls and a member of the American Legion Post #31. Fred had a strong concern and deep love for the outdoors. He was a member of the Herkimer County Conservation Alliance, the Little Falls Environmental Commission, The Central New York Retriever Club and served as the small game chairman for the Herkimer County Sportsman Alliance. He was the founder of Rock City Sportsmen, Inc. Some outdoor activities he enjoyed were hunting, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed raising pheasants and black Labrador Retrievers and taking the dogs to field trials. The overall success and countless individual achievements in his family life were due to Fred's character and strengths. He possessed a strong work ethic and was always motivated by concern for his family's well being. He had a natural affinity with the earth and an intuitive appreciation of its beauty and its bounty. Personally, Fred was a helpful man, one who unfailingly proved both willing and able to assist others with his quiet guidance and genuine concern. Beyond his family circle, he derived great enjoyment from spending time with his many friends. His gentle, conscientious and supportive disposition will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Fred is survived by his beloved wife Polly, of Fort Plain; five beloved sons, Fred G. Scarano and wife Gail of Little Falls, Dominick Scarano and wife Shelley of Little Falls, Rock Scarano and wife Shelley of Little Falls, Dr. Frank Scarano and wife Janet of New Bedford, Massachusetts and Anthony Scarano and wife Treika of Little Falls; two loving daughters, Marie Rodick and husband Peter of North Carolina and Carol Grundner and husband Edward of Oxford, NY. He is also survived by two sisters, Angie Monary and husband Carl of Huntington Beach, California and Janet Falzarano and husband Michael of Richmond, Virginia and a sister in law, Rosina (Casullo) Scarano of Little Falls. He is predeceased by his brother, Frank R. Scarano. 19 cherished grandchildren survive Fred. They are Peter Rodick, Stefania Caracane and husband Kornell, Carole Rodick, Tracy Lynn Young and husband Dave, Fred Scarano, Jr., Christopher Scarano, Michael Scarano, Aaron O'Bryan, Rory O'Bryan, Natalia Scarano, Karlie Grundner, Philip Grundner, Ian Grundner, Edward Grundner, Kelly Scarano, Jacob Scarano, Ellen Scarano, Neiko Scarano and Lorenzo Scarano. His six great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins were all very special to Fred. Also surviving is his lifelong friend, Gino Terenzetti, among many other wonderful friends. Fred was blessed with a second loving family upon his marriage to Polly. They include Pollys children, Donald and Laura Edmunds and JoAnn and Chuck Failing, grandchildren, Todd and Robin Failing, Valicity and Zane Spaulding, Tim and Mariella Failing, James and Sharon Edmunds, Anthony and Shari Edmunds and Christopher Edmunds, great grandchildren, Jovonna Failing, Marcus Failing, Joey Kucharski and Hunter Spaulding, Timmy Failing, Nicole Failing and a brother in law and sister in law, Ruth and Bruce Darling. The Scarano Family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street, Little Falls on Sunday, October 12 th from 5-8 pm. Fred's funeral from Enea Funeral Home, Little Falls will commence at 10:15 am on Monday morning where prayer will be offered thence to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Albany Street, Little Falls, where a Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 am by the Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia rector, officiating. Funeral Procession will follow to St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer, where he will be laid to rest. The United States Marine Corps. will offer full military honors. Members of the Herkimer VFW will form an honor guard. By family request, please omit floral contributions and kindly consider honoring Fred's memory with contributions to the American Lung Association or to the Amercian Cancer Society.
