Obituary of Joseph Viscome
Joseph R. Viscome, a lontime Herkimer resident, passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2003 with his loving family by his side at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Utica, New York. He was born on September 23, 1913 in Rome, New York; the son of the late Gregory and Julia (Destito) Viscome. He was a member of the Church of Sts. Anthony & Joseph's in Herkimer. Joseph was very active in his community and became involved in several organizations: he was a member of the Michael S. Pliseck VFW where he served as past commander, the Knights of Columbus Council $579 and its 4th degree, St. Anthony's Crusaders, and the Herkimer Fish and Game Club. Joseph was also selected as Senior Citizen of the year. He was united in marriage to the former Florence Neitzke on November 5, 1932 in Johnstown, New York. The couple had shared in a blessed union of 71 years of mariage. Joseph, a World War II Veteran, served with the US Army. He enlisted on January 22, 1944 and was honorably discharged on January 29, 1946. During his time in the Army, he also served in the European Theatre of Operations. Joseph was employed by Remington Arms in Ilion for many years. Outside of his working career, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. Along with his good friend, Youngry Cirillo, he used to help stock local trout streams. He was known to lend a helping hand cooking in the kitchen for various groups. Surviving are his beloved wife, Florence of Herkimer; his daughter, Sondra M. Viscome of Little Falls; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; his inlaws, Minnie Viscomi and May Brown. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Anthony, Gregory, Nicholas and Samuel Viscome. Friends and relatives may call at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington Street, Herkimer, New York on Friday, October 24, 2003 from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The following organizations will meet at the funeral home on Friday evening: Herkimer Knights of Columbus, at 5:30pm; and Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at 9:00 am from the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home and at 9:30 am from the Church of Sts. Anthony and Joseph with the Reverend Robert Shinos, Pastor, celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place privately in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions in memory of Joseph may be made to a charity of one's choice. Contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
