Obituary of Catherine Walsh
Mrs. Catherine Mary Walsh, 81, a longtime resident of Ilion, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, Dec. 9, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. She was born June 10, 1922, in Pittston, Pa., daughter of the late Hubert and Anna (Barlow) Gardner, and was a graduate of St. John's Catholic High School in Pittston. She later attended business college, then obtained a job in Washington, D.C., to work for the government. On Feb. 6, 1943, she joined in marriage with Eugene "Jerry" Walsh at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston. The couple had shared in a loving union of 58 years together. Mr. Walsh passed away June 4, 2001. Catherine had last worked full time with General Electric in Utica, serving as their head librarian at the French Road and Broad Street locations. At one time she had also worked with Remington Rand. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church in Old Forge, along with the Church of Annunciation in Ilion. Catherine obtained gainful knowledge in working with computers at one time. She also was an avid seamstress. Catherine enjoyed many seasons together with her family and loving husband in Old Forge and Otter Lake. Her family was the center of her life, as she devoted herself unselfishly to them. She will be dearly missed by her loving family, including her children, John Gardner and his wife Kathy of Old Forge; Sharon Applegate of New Hartford; Mary June Wainman and her husband David of Ilion; Mary Catherine Pasquariello and her husband Charles of Pompton Lakes, N.J., and Jerry Walsh Jr. and his wife Carol of Ilion; her grandchildren, John and his wife Michelle Gardner, Kurt and his wife Christine Gardner, Chad Gardner, Jay Applegate, Justin Applegate, Suzette Baker and husband Scott, Jeanine Steer and husband Greg, Janice Gondola and husband Robert, C.J. Pasquariello and wife Kathy, Jerry Walsh and wife Amanda and Christopher Walsh; great-grandchildren, John Matthew Gardner, Andrew, Kaitlyn, Ben and Morgan Gardner, Victoria, Gregory and Isabella Steer, Madison, Sydney, Robert and Bailey Gondola, Kailey Anna Pasquariello and Patrick James Walsh; many nieces, nephews and cousins and a brother-in-law , Joseph Walsh of Exeter, Pa. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, at 9:15 a.m. from the Enea Family Funeral Home (Ilion-Frankfort) where prayer will be offered and thence to Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, Frankfort, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Spring interment will take place at Riverview Cemetery in Old Forge. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main Street between Ilion and Frankfort, on Friday, Dec. 12, from 5-8 p.m. The family would like to thank the following organizations throughout the Mohawk Valley which offered so much care and compassion to Catherine: Ilion Fire Department, Visiting Nurses of Utica and Oneida County, Office of the Aging in Utica, the Willowvale Fire Department, Edwards Ambulance of Chadwicks and the New Hartford Paramedics. Due to the thoughtful and attentive care offered by these organizations, it is the request of the family that donations in memory of Catherine be considered to any of the list above.
