Obituary of Grace Darling

DOLGEVILLE-Grace S. Darling of Dolgeville NY passed away on April 7 at the Folts Homes in Herkimer, NY at the age of 93. Grace was born in Salisbury, New York on January 26, 1917 the daughter the of Ermon J. and Satie Wilson Sweet. She was educated in the Burrells Corners rural school and graduated from Dolgeville High School in 1934. She attended Oneonta Normal School graduating in 1937 and began teaching in the Metcalf District School, Military Road, Dolgeville and Scotch Bush School in Johnstown, NY. Mrs. Darling continued her education by attending and graduating from Buffalo State Teachers College and received her M.A from Syracuse University. She taught in the Dolgeville Central School system for 39 years retiring in September 1976. On June 23, 1962 she married Edward K. Darling in the Dolgeville United Methodist Church, Dolgeville, NY. He predeceased her on October 27, 1985. Mrs. Darling was an active member of the Dolgeville United Methodist Church - a former Sunday School teacher and served as recording secretary for the Administrative Board for many years. She was also a member of the former Susanne Wesley Circle serving as its Secretary and the Berean Class. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Board of Trustees, and various other committees. With her exceptional handwriting she was the caretaker of the Memorial Book. On March 25, 2001 she was honored as a long time church member of 71 years at its "Special Person Recognition Day". Grace was a life member of the Auskerada Chapter #204 of Eastern Star serving as its Historian and Warder. A member of the Colonel William Feeter Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution serving as its Secretary and Chairperson of Good Citizen of DAR committee for many years. Other associations included the Adirondack Senior Citizens, the Dolgeville-Manheim Historical Society, Dolgeville Retired Teachers Association and the Herkimer County and NewYork State Retired Teachers Associations. Mrs. Darling is survived by several cousins and very special friends, Greg, Cheryl, Lauren and Ryan Jorrey of Dolgeville. There will be no calling hours. Funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday April 9, 2010 at the United Methodist Church, Helmer Avenue, Dolgeville, NY with Reverend Rebecca Laird officiating. Internment will follow in the Dolgeville Cemetery. Memorials to honor Grace may be made to the Dolgeville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
