Obituary of Adele Schilling

Dolgeville Mrs. Adele A. Schilling 92 a resident of Folts Home in Herkimer since 2003 and formerly of Lotville Road, Town of Oppenheim, entered into eternal rest on the morning of Sunday April 25th after a long, caring, and productive life. She was born in New York City on August 22, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Sadie (Schwartz) Gambino and attended New York City schools. She furthered her education at Queensboro Community College. Her professional life was spent as a full-charge bookkeeper and office manager. She was extremely proficient with numbers, and could type 140 words per minute and could take rapid dictation using Pitman shorthand. During WW II she used these talents to transcribe messages from soldiers on the front via short wave radio and then relay them to their families by phone. Adele also drove a canteen truck at Fort Totten, providing hot coffee to soldiers on the move. She first worked at an MGM Studios office for several years and then accepted an office manger’s position at Precast Inc. of Flushing, overseeing the books of seven corporations. During this time she was also co-owner of an affiliated trucking company that transported the majority of the concrete panels to construct Shea Stadium and parts of the 1964 World’s Fair pavilions. At that time, just for fun she learned to drive 18 wheelers. Adele was a licensed pilot and co-owned a Cessna 172 with her son for many years. After retiring in 1984 after 30 plus years with Precast she moved from New York City to Dolgeville in October 1985. She was a devout communicant and women’s club participant at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Dolgeville, and was a volunteer at Little Falls Hospital for many years. Her joys included gardening, baking, her dog “Mickey”, and using her skills to help other people in any way she could and large helpings of chocolate ice cream. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert G. Schilling who died on January 4, 1990, and a sister Rose who died in 2004. She is survived by a son and his wife Robert G. and Patricia Shilling Jr. and her granddaughter Christina Schilling. In respecting Adele’s wishes there are NO Calling hours. Friends are invited to attend GRAVESIDE services on Wednesday April 28, 2010 at 10 AM at St. Joseph’s Cemetery Dolgeville. Rev. William A. Gorman pastor of St. Joseph’s Church will offer prayers. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may send a donation to the Herkimer County Humane Society PO Box 73 Mohawk, NY 13407.
