Obituary of Lewis Mentis

SYRACUSE- Mr. Lewis W. Mentis, 80, formerly of St. Johnsville, passed away on April 23, 2010 at Loretto Nursing Center. He was born on March 16, 1930, in St. Johnsville, son of the late Richard and Catherine (Leggins) Mentis. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was also a long time New York State Trooper in Oneida. Lewis lived in Las Vegas, NV for many years before returning to Syracuse in 2008. Music was his passion. He was a self taught musician and leader of his own jazz band. Survivors include his son Michael Mentis and his wife Tammy of Colonie; his grandchildren: Miles Mentis, Davon Stallings, Kason Stallings and David Stallings; his longtime companion Nancy Stewart and his nieces, nephews and cousins. He was supported through his illness by his close friend Kelly James of Syracuse. Lewis was predeceased by his sisters: Clara Mentis and Catherine Mentis Moore ; his brother Richard Mentis and Michael’s mother Carthella Perkins Mentis. In keeping with his wishes there will be no calling hours. His burial will take place at the convenience of his family at W. St. Johnsville Cemetery where military honors will be offered by the U.S. Army. The family requests donations in Lewis’ name be made to The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research, 106 Towerview Court, Cary, NC 27513. The family is being cared for by the Enea family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY.
