Obituary of Debra Scouten

ILION-MOHAWK - Debra “Debbie” D. Scouten, age 55, of 60 Grove St., Ilion, formerly of Mohawk, passed away on Monday, August 2, 2010. She was born on May 3, 1955, in Herkimer, the daughter of Richard and Betty (Hisert) Watkins. Debbie graduated from Mohawk High School in 1973 and Utica School of Commerce in 2008 as a Medical Office Assistant. On December 14, 1973, she was married to Edward C. Scouten in Mohawk. Mrs. Scouten was a sexton at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, for 18 years. She also was a home health care worker for local families and worked at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, for ten years. Debbie attended the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion. Survivors include her parents, Richard and Betty Watkins, of Mohawk; two sons, Michael, of Mohawk, and Jason, of Ilion; her husband, Edward, of Ilion; her grandson, Michael Scouten, II; her sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Vernon Volo, of Mohawk; three nieces, Jennifer Bull and husband, Ronny, and son, Samuel, Erica Miscione and husband, Paul, and two sons, Zachary and Matthew, and Janelle Roginski and husband, Steven; her aunts, Marsha Shahoud and husband, Ray, and Ann Watkins; also Ian Vandawalker (who was like an adopted son and lived with the family for fourteen years); close friends, Joe Hartigan, Brian Dempsey, Ben Countryman, Marc Streeter, Scott Reichinger, John Scialdo, Rich Denny, Josh Amodio, and many other close and dear friends; and several cousins. Funeral services will be held 9:15 a.m., Friday, August 6, 2010, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, and 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, August 5, 2010, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. The family wishes to give a special thanks to the HOSPICE nurses for their care and support during her brief illness. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Annunciation or HOSPICE. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Debbie’s family has entrusted all funeral and burial arrangements to her cousin, Don Applegate, Funeral Director.
