Obituary of Elton Hopson

Mr. Elton J. Hopson 84 of 57 North Helmer Avenue Dolgeville, a prominent businessman died Wednesday September 29, 2010 at the Folts Home in Herkimer with his loving family at his side. Elton was born in Little Falls, on December 13, 1925 the son of Harry and Harriet (Shepard) Hopson and was a graduate of Dolgeville High school, class of 1944. A veteran of World War II he served honorably in the Army with Battery A 580th Field Artillery Battalion in Central Europe from 1944 until his discharge in 1946. He obtained the rank of Sgt. And was awarded the following service medals, World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon and one Bronze Service Star, along with being an expert rifleman. Upon returing from the war he attended Syracuse University and graduated from there in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree. His marriage to the former Sarah A. Wessels took place on November 28, 1948. Elton retired from the Hopson-Luther-Harper Insurance Agency Inc. in 1990 with 40 years of service to the community and surrounding areas, as a general insurance agent. He was a member of the Dolgeville United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge #796 F&AM, and the American Legion and VFW organizations. He is survived by his wife Sarah, a son and his wife James and Caryl Hopson of Dolgeville, his daughters and their husbands Dr. Laurie Vander Heide of New Haven, CT, Catherine and Robert Farris of Litchfield Park, AZ and Julie and Larry Pettinelli of Larchmont, NY, 10 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren. Elton wanted to be remembered with a smile. In keeping with his wishes there are NO Calling hours. Services with Military Honors will be in May 2011 in the Dolgeville Cemetery at a time to be announced. The family would like to Thank the staff at the Folts Home for their generous care and loving compassion shown to Elton and them. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Community Animal Programs c/o YMCA 15 Jackson St. Little Falls, NY 13365 or to the Dolgeville United Methodist Church 21 North Helmer Avenue Dolgeville, NY 13329. His arrangements were entrusted by him to Brian A. Roberts of the Roberts & Enea Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville.
