Obituary of Mary Campagna

HERKIMER/MOHAWK-Mrs. Mary Ellen (Atkins) Campagna, 64 of East Main St., Mohawk, a Herkimer native, went home to be with the Lord suddenly on Thursday afternoon, September 30, 2010. She was born on August 10, 1946 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Howard and Mildred (Miller) Atkins and graduated with Herkimer High School, “Class of 1964”. Her marriage to Robert “Bob” Campagna took place in Herkimer on October 23, 1976; a loving union of 33 years. At one time she was married to Alex Fiato. Mary Ellen was last employed with Schenectady Community Action Program as a Residential Operation Specialist for four years. She was currently keeping active volunteering her time with St. Francis de Sales Regional Catholic School as a Religious Education teacher. Mary Ellen was of the Catholic Faith and a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk where she also sang in the choir. Mrs. Campagna was a dedicated and attentive wife who served as a gentle and steadfast caregiver, tending to her family’s needs with great devotion. She was an outstanding mother, one who offered her children and grandchildren her affection, support and guidance. As a grandmother, she extended her family attitudes to encompass the next generation: she shared her loving and caring personality with her grandchildren and took a great interest in her life. Mrs. Campagna was a proud “military mother” who loved the fact that three of her children served with the Army, Navy and Airforce. As of recent, Mary Ellen enjoyed the hobby of scrapbooking and loved to read in her spare time. She leaves her loving family; her husband: Bob of Mohawk; six children: Richard Fiato and wife Julie of Lake Orion, Michigan, Kimberly Fiato of Mohawk, Alex Fiato and wife Jennifer of Great Lakes, Illinois, Patrick Fiato of Greensburg, Pa., Shawn Campagna of Fulton and Nick Campagna of Ilion; a brother and sister in law: David Atkins and wife Loretta and her sister Marie Scialdon of Herkimer; in laws: Eugene Campagna and wife Sue and David Campagna all of Herkimer; nine cherished grandchildren: Joseph, Alyssa, Desie, Jason, Benjamin, Valerie, Daphne, Alexander, and Portia; an uncle: Fordy Washington of Herkimer; a step great grandchild; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving are many dear friend especially mentioning her cousin, Merle Williams and her family of Ilion. Mary Ellen also leaves her beloved canine companion, Rascal. The Campagna family will receive relatives and friends at Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer on Sunday, October 3, 2010 from 2- 5 p.m. The funeral will commence at 10:15 am on Monday, Oct. 4th from the chapel of the funeral home where a prayer service will take place and at 11 am from Blessed Sacrament Church, Main St., Mohawk where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Father Mark Cunningham, Sacramental Minister assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director. Procession will follow to Mt. View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls where she will be laid to rest. Kindly consider memorial offerings in Mary Ellen’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association; envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home. The family would like to thank all the relatives and friends for their kind acts of sympathy and support during this difficult time and also to Sister Mary Jo Tallman for her kindness.
