Obituary of Richard Caulkins

ILION-Mr. Richard E. “Dick” Caulkins, age 70 of Center Street, entered into eternal rest on Sunday morning, January 23, 2011 at Little Falls Hospital after being stricken at home. He was born in Mohawk on December 6, 1940, son of the late Glenn A. and Elsie I. (Schell) Caulkins and educated in Mohawk schools. On July 26, 1969, he was joined in marriage with Dorothy “Dott” Wheeler in the Ilion United Methodist Church; a loving and devoted union of 41 years. On July 11, 1960, Mr. Caulkins enlisted into the military with the US AirForce and was honorably discharged from active duty on July 10, 1966 with four years of dedicated service to his country. He was last employed as an installer with S.C. Leggs Water Pump Company of Little Falls and was of the Methodist Faith. Mr. Caulkins was active in the community and was a current member of the Ilion Elk’s Lodge 1444 and the Ilion Knights of Columbus and was a former member of the Ilion Moose Lodge #1010. Richard was very handy and enjoyed taking on new projects. He took great pride in his camp in Speculator, NY which was a big part of his life. He also enjoyed cooking and was a history buff. Mr. Caulkins was a kind man who enjoyed the company of family and friends. He had fond memories of the enjoyable occasions they shared with him and will be sadly missed. Survivors include his loving family; his wife, Dorothy; two sons: Edmund D. Myers and wife Cynthia of Little Falls and Kerry Myers of Ilion; three sisters: Glenda Reynolds of New Jersey, Marsha O’Dell and husband Ronald of Mohawk and Darlene Ferguson and husband Harry of Mohawk; his cherished grandchildren: Amanda DePaolo and husband Chris, Melissa Boepple and husband Tim, Meagan Strack, Kaitlin Myers, and Lauren Myers; an adored great grandchild: Kailynn Boepple and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Caulkins. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (894-8000) on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 from 4-7 p.m. and also on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 from 10-11 a.m. The funeral will commence at 11 am on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Jon Noble officiating. A spring interment service with military honors by the US AirForce will take place in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion. In lieu of floral tributes, kindly consider memorial offerings in Mr. Caulkins’ name to the Speculator Volunteer Ambulance Corps., or to the American Heart Association; envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home. The Caulkins family is grateful to the Ilion Fire Department (Ambulance Corps) for their supportive compassion offered on Sunday morning and to Scott Hendrix for his concern shown. Members of the Ilion Elks Lodge 1444 will conduct their service on Tuesday evening at 6:15 p.m. at the funeral home and the Knights of Columbus at 6:45 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by funeral director, Daniel J. Enea.
