Obituary of Viola Cirillo

NJ/Herkimer: Viola E. Cirillo, passed away on January 26, 2011, in New Jersey, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Herkimer, New York, a daughter of the late Ulderico and Josephine (Arciello) Taffi, and attended local schools. She was married to the late Dominic O. Cirillo of Mohawk and had a loving, beautiful, happy marriage. Dom was a very devoted, loving husband. Upon her graduation from area schools, Viola was employed at Prine Cleaners of Ilion, as a billing clerk, and then during wartime, she was employed at Remington Arms as a “Time Clerk.” After the war, she married Dominic and lived in Syracuse during his college days. Upon his graduation, they moved to Albany where Viola worked at Williams Press, as a secretary, then for Western Electric Telephone Directories, as a billing clerk. Due to family illness within the Cirillo family, Vi and Dom moved back to Mohawk, but eventually settled in Utica. Vi held several positions in the area. Because of Dom’s work, they moved to North Carolina and then settled in Old Tappan, New Jersey. During her time in New Jersey, Viola was employed at Dynamit Nobel of America as a Receptionist, and also filled other positions within that Company. Vi became the Food Editor for a “New York Diet Newspaper”, called The Diet Times, which contained original recipes and articles about her love for cooking. She also has recipes that were published in “QVC” Cookbook, Taste of Home Cookbook and many local cookbooks and newspapers and won many cooking contests. She retired from Dynamit Nobel, but was busier during her retirement. She enjoyed spending time at her Summer home in Old Forge and enjoyed taking day trips. Vi moved back to Mohawk to spend her retirement there and kept herself busy with her crafts, sewing and cooking. She also became interested in poetry; many have been published on the web and catalogued in the Library of Congress. Being from a large family, she developed a sense of humor. This has helped her accomplish many things throughout her life. She loved playing Bridge and was a member in many clubs and organizations. She was a devoted, loving mother and her family came first. She was a strong, honest, determined person who accomplished much during her life. She leaves her beloved son Brian, of New Jersey, who was her pride and joy. She also leaves two sisters, Jeannette Taffi of Tennesee, and Cynthia Taffi Truax and husband Irving (Ted) of Ilion, NY; three brothers, Douglas Taffi and wife Marie of Florida, Ronald Taffi and wife Ruth of Louisiana, Roger Taffi and wife Darlene of Florida; a brother-in-law, Patrick Cirillo of Mohawk; and a sister-in-law Rose Cirillo of Mohawk; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves her beloved pet cat Tasha, a true friend. Viola thanks all those who cared and helped her so many times. There are no calling hours, and in lieu of flowers, Vi has asked that you please consider a donation to the Herkimer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 73, Mohawk, NY 13407. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass to be celebrated by the Reverend Mark Cunningham, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director, at 10 am on Saturday, February 5, 2011 in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Interment will take place in the spring in Mohawk Cemetery. Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Director, Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, NY (315-894-8000), is serving the family.
