Obituary of Marilyn Thomes O'Keefe

Sauquoit-Mohawk - Marilyn Thomes O'Keefe, age 74, of Sauquoit, formerly of Mohawk, passed away during a snow storm on Sunday, February 12, 2012, at Oneida Healthcare ECF, after fighting COPD and heart valve issues for many years. Marilyn was born the fourth child of Frank Edward Thomes, Sr., and Helen Florence Brownrigg Thomes during a blizzard on May 19, 1937, at Katy Johnson's Maternity Home in Mohawk. She attended Mohawk School for grades K-7 and Utica Schools for grades 8-12, graduating from Utica Free Academy in 1955. Marilyn was married on October 3, 1959, to Arthur Joseph O'Keefe in Elkton, MD, by Reverend Schafer, a Methodist Clergy. She worked at W.T. Grant Co., the Bank of Utica, Faxton, Griffiss AFB, NY, Kelly AFB, Texas, and volunteered at Patrick AFB, FL. She had been raised in the Mohawk Methodist Church and belonged to Central United Methodist Church. Marilyn enjoyed fixing up her home, flower gardening, until she became allergic to the flowers, knitting, crocheting, sewing and bowling. She enjoyed working and playing on her many computers over the years. She was currently attempting to write a novel. Our mother was a natural nurturer who truly cared for those around her. Survivors include her two daughters, Joan Michele O'Keefe and Janet Marie O'Keefe, both of Sauquoit; many cousins from the Thomes and Brownrigg sides of the family; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a few great-greats. She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Marlene, Marceline and Marjorie; and her brothers, Frank, Jr., and Paul. The family wishes to thank friends Patty Ferrone, Anna Duffy, Cathy Ferguson and Diann DiNitto for their visits to Marilyn in the ECF and the ECF staff for their care and compassion. Funeral services will be held 5:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Elder Kenneth W. Palmer officiating. Calling hours are Thursday, February 16, 2012, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., prior to the funeral home service. Spring interment will be in the new Mohawk Cemetery on Vickerman Hill. Marilyn was pleased to have her name on the deed for the cemetery plot, as her daughters suggested, so that she could be a property owner for all eternity. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Stevens-Swan Humane Society or Herkimer County Humane Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. The O'Keefe family has entrusted all arrangements and supervision to Don Applegate, Funeral Director.
