Obituary of Julia Smagalski

East Herkimer: Mrs. Julia Smagalski, 95, of Laurel Avenue, East Herkimer, passed away on Thursday, March 1, 2012 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. She had resided at Mohawk Valley Healthcare Center for the past 3 years. Mrs. Smagalski was born on September 25, 1916 in Jersey City, NJ, a daughter of the late John and Helen (Malinowski) Witkowski. She was a lifelong area resident, and received her education in the Van Hornesville school system. She and Stanley Smagalski were joined in marriage in November 1937 in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. After 62 years of marriage, Stanley passed away on February 4, 1999. Julia and Stanley together were the owners/operators of the family farm on Robinson Road in Mohawk for 26 years. Julia was a faithful member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk. She was also a member of the AARP. Mrs.Smagalski is survived by her brothers, William Witkowski of Ilion, Charlie Witkowski of Fort Plain, Stanley Witkowski of Herkimer, and John Witkowski of Tucson, AZ; sisters, Frances Mlekoday of Herkimer, Clara Sarafin and her husband John of Herkimer, and Staffie Greseck and her husband Stan of Richfield Springs; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Stanley, her parents, John and Helen, a brother Edward Witkowski, and sisters, Edna Guzik Orcheski and Stella Witkowski. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 from 11 am - 1 pm at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington Street, Herkimer. Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director of Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, will conduct Julia's funeral service at the funeral home at the conclusion of calling hours at 1 pm. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Those wishing may contribute in Julia's memory to a charity of choice. The family is being served by Kevin E.
