Obituary of Harold R. Davis

MOHAWK - Mr. Harold R. Davis, of 78 Church St., Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 in the Allen Calder Wing at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford, NY, with his family by his side. He was born in the Town of Lincoln, NY, on July 6, 1923, the son of Ralph and Theresa (Austin) Davis. Harold was a graduate of Mohawk High School. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theatre of Combat as a Platoon Sergeant with the 45th Division 7th Army, and was discharged November 1945 with several Medals of Commendation for his service. He was joined in marriage to Virginia Palmer, on July 12, 1947, in the Mohawk Reformed Church, with whom he shared sixty-four years of marriage. Throughout their union, Harold and Virginia drew great strength from one another and from their mutual devotion. They truly enjoyed a relationship that was respected. He cherished family traditions, events and holidays, observing and honoring them with a pride that he passed on to his family. He was employed for over thirty years at Univac, as Superintendent of Warehousing, Shipping, Receiving and Traffic Control at Utica. In retirement, Harold and Virginia enjoyed traveling and their summer homes on Canadarago Lake and also Pine Lake. He was a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church, serving several years both as a Deacon and Elder on the Church Consistory. Harold was also a member of the American Legion Post 25, Mohawk, VFW Post 4915, Herkimer, and a former member of Univac Management Association. Mr. Davis is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia; his three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and David Cramer, of Mohawk, Janet and Daniel Platts, of Ilion, and Arlene and Karl Tripple, of Ilion; four grandchildren, Joy Barrett and her husband, Mark, of Homer, NY, and Daniel, Todd and Jill Platts, all of Ilion; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Platts and Elena Barrett; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Geraldine and Alice; one brother, Richard; and his parents. Abiding by Harold's request, he will be cremated. There will be no public calling hours, and the funeral service will be private at the convenience of his family. The family extends heartfelt thanks to MOVAC, Faxton-St. Luke's Emergency Room Personnel, Dr. Brehaut, and all the nurses on 3 West for the excellent care and compassion shown to Harold. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to MOVAC, 15 State Rt. 5S, Mohawk, NY 13407, or the Mohawk Reformed Church, 20 S. Otsego St., Mohawk, NY 13407-1228. The Davis family requested that all Harold's service arrangements and supervision be entrusted to family friend and Funeral Director Don Applegate at Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home.
