Obituary of Robert Crouse

ST. JOHNSVILLE- Robert Paul Crouse Sr.78, of 6 North Division St. passed away on Friday, March 9, 2012 at home with his loving family by his side. Robert was born on December 21, 1933 in Albany, NY. He was the son of Evelyn Crouse Haggerty and the step-son of Leland Haggerty. Mr. Crouse served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, being stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Marine Corps remained very important to him throughout his life. A resident of St. Johnsville since the age of 14, he was a very active person, having been a member of the St. Johnsville Fire Dept. since 1955 and served as both 1st and 2nd Asst. Chief. He also served as a deputy County Fire Co-ordinator, a position he was real proud of. Another joy of his was when he went to the Elementary School during Fire Prevention Week to talk to the students. He was a member of the American Legion for 56 years, serving several years as their commander. He was a member of St. Johns Reformed Church and served the Church as both a Deacon and an Elder as well as a member of their choir. His faith was a very important part of his life and helped him greatly when he became so ill. Robert served as a part-time police officer for the Village of St. Johnsville and he also coached baseball for Babe Ruth. Robert was employed at Palatine Dye both prior to and after returning from his duty in the Marine Corp. , Beech-Nut in Canajoharie and until his retirement, the NYS Canal System. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Karen VanGorder Crouse. He was the proud father of six children, Paula Crouse Wall (Jody), Palatine Bridge, Robert Paul Crouse Jr, (Deborah) of Canajoharie, Teri Crouse Muchow (Wayne) of Fayetteville, Ga., Cindy Crouse Oertel (Peter) , of Raleigh , North Carolina, Aaron Crouse (Michelle) of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Alice Crouse Smith (Larry) of Palatine Bridge, NY. He was also the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren, Krystle and Joshua Crouse, Samantha and David Wall, Megan, Tiffany, and April Muchow, Peter and Matthew Oertel, and Dylan and Hunter Smith.. He also had a God Daughter, Corinne Mueller of Duanesburg and a step-sister, Katherine May. Mr. Crouse was pre-deceased by his mother, Evelyn Haggerty.and step-father, Leland Haggerty. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville from 2-4 & 7-9pm on Sunday, March 11, 2012. A Fire Dept service will be held at 7:30pm Sunday evening with an American Legion service immediately following. A religious service will be held at St. John's Reformed Church at 11am on Monday, March 12, 2012. Procession will follow to West St. Johnsville Cemetery where he will be laid to rest. Military honors will be presented by the U.S. Marines Corps. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert's name may be given to either, St. Johnsville American Legion, St. Johnsville Fire Dept. or St. John's Reformed Church.
