Obituary of Donald J Giarrusso

LITTLE FALLS: Donald J. Giarrusso, age 73, a lifelong Little Falls resident, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at home with the love and support of his family. Don was born on June 15, 1938 in Little Falls, the son of the late Frank and Loretta (Jones) Giarrusso. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School. Don entered into the US Air Force in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1960 as an Airman First Class. His entire working career was spent at Redco (Salada) Foods in Little Falls as a head mechanic. He also operated the family wned business, Lock Tavern located on Rte. 5S. Donald was united in marriage to Diane Tucci on December 31, 1988. Donnie was an avid sports fan, loving the Syracuse University Orangemen, NY Giants and the NY Mets. He also very much enjoyed going to the Fonda Speedway with his close friend, Doug Unser and playing horse shoes with his family. His 1995 Chevy short bed Z71 truck was something that brought much enjoyment to him. Don was a member of the Owls Club and the Lock Hairs. He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane; his children, Rodney Giarrusso and wife Kelhi of Mohawk, Debra Sobolowski of Ilion, Jennifer Norris and husband Kevin of Rye, NY and Joseph Bonfardeci of Little Falls; a brother, Terry Giarrusso and wife Shirley of Dolgeville; grandchildren, Stacie Pettengill, Thyamara, Adam and Erin Lopez; great grandchildren, Cecelia and Trinity; several cousins, nieces and nephews, including a special niece and god daughter, Dawn Howe; special cousin and life-time family friend, Barbara Petrie; his father-in-law, Richard Tansley; his in-laws, Peter Tucci, Mark and Georgia Tucci, Gary and Joanne Tucci, Matt Tucci, Christine Swartz, Kim and Jim Eckard, Becky and Todd Perkins, as well as his canine companion, Ukon King. Don was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Beatrice Tansley. The Family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the wonderful nurses and doctors at the Bassett Herkimer Cancer Treatment Center, specifically Michelle and Reggie. A special thanks to his many friends at the treatment center, that made the hours pass more quickly with some laughs. Also, thank you to the Little Falls doctors and the ER staff for your compassion during our difficult time. We also thank Brian Hall, PA of Canajoharie. Most of all, thank you to hospice and the extra ordinary nurses who provided the family with comfort and care in Donald's final days. In keeping with Don's wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial graveside service on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 10:00 am at Rural Park Cemetery, Ingham Mills. There will be no public calling hours. In lieu of floral arrangements, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Bassett Cancer Center or Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. Envelopes will be available at the graveside. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY (315)823-2424 and are under the direction of Harry J. Enea, Funeral Director.
